Rewrite of Academic Essay

This winter, many people died from cold winter in the north part of the world. A few years earlier, many people died from hot summer in France. The ice in the South and North Pole is melting; the level of sea is rising. In today’s world, there are many serious problems such as the abnormality of the four seasons and the rise in sea levels due to climate change. However, there are still some solutions to reduce the damages caused by these problems.

The most obvious problem is the abnormality of the four seasons. Many places’ climate has changed, either warmer or colder than the past 50 to 100 years. In the south part of China, in Guang Dong, Si Chuang and Gui Zhou Provinces, there had been very heavy snow this winter. Normally in winter, these places do not have snow at all. Some cities like Wuhan got the heaviest snow in more than half a century of above 27cm snowfall compared with no snowing in the past.

The other problem due to climate change is the rise in sea level. According to a study conducted by Columbia University that looked at the sea level rise due to climate change, there will be a rise in sea level in New York City of 11.8 to 37.5 inches and 9.5 to 42.5 inches in the metropolitan region by the 2080s. From Wigley, Barrow and Warrick's research, he also pointed out that “most estimates of the rate of global eustatic sea level change over the last 100 years, as derived from tide-gauge records, range between 1.0mm/yr and 2.0mm/yr”. The rise in sea levels is serious; many people lived in shoreline cities will have to face the problem of moving to higher places if their cities are drowned by sea.

Although there are already many negative consequences due to the climate change, we can still do some actions to minimize the damage. The effective way is to reduce the density of CO2. As most people known, CO2 is one of the greenhouse gases. It makes the earth like a greenhouse with temperature rising of 4℃ when the density of CO2 doubles.

On one hand, we can reduce our emission of CO2. For the individual, it is recommended to take public transport rather than driving his or her own car. Many countries such as China and Japan have already set laws to limit the CO2 emission of cars. For the commercial industries, CO2 limitation should also be implemented by the government.

On the other hand, we can increase the cover percentage of forests on the earth or simply plant more trees to absorb more CO2. UK Tree Planting said that “Each tree planted ‘offsets’ your environmental impact by ‘breathing’ in about 730 kg CO2 emissions over its lifetime of 100 years. It is estimated that the average person needs to save about 7,000 kg of CO2 per year”. Therefore, it is recommended to plant 10 trees every year for one person. In China, there are also people who donate money in helping the government to plant more trees.

On the whole, the problems we have faced are serious and we have seen their damages. However, if we keep trying our best to control the climate change by reducing the emission of CO2 and increasing the cover percentage of forests on the earth, the rise in sea level caused by climate change and the wealth we lose in the unusual hot summers or snowstorms will be minimize.

Thank, Aaron. I guess we can say "better late than never" for this post!

I only wish your classmates could have heard more from you this term as well. You have many insightful thoughts that you could have shared with them.

Best of luck in your future.
